North East India is a home to a large number of monasteries. It shows that Buddhism occupies a great place in the religious lives of the people in North East India. These monasteries not only show the present scenario of religion in these states but also throws light on its ancient traditions and rituals. While on your tour to North East India you can go for a monastery tour. Some of the famous monasteries in the whole of North East India are:


Rumtek Monastery:
It is the most famous monastery of North east India and is located in Sikkim. It was constructed in the 16th century by Gyalwa Karmapa, a refugee who came to Sikkim from China. It is the perfect place to see some of the rare and ancient artefacts.


Pemayangtse Monastery:
Offering an incredible view of lofty Kanchanjunga mountain, the Pemayangtse Monastery is located in West Sikkim. It is around 140 km from the capital city, Gangtok. It is one of the highly revered monastery belonging to the Nyingma order.


Enchey Monastery:
Perched on a hill top, Enchey monastery commands a picture-perfect view of the city. Constructed during the rule of the Thutob Namgyal, the monastery is located only 3 km of Gangtok. The place at which it was built is believed to have been blessed by Lama Druptab Karpo. He was a famous tantrik and it is said that he was endowed with flying powers.


Tashiding Monastery:
Located in West Sikkim, the Tashiding Monastery also belongs to the Nyingmapa order. It is situated on a hill sandwiched between two beautiful rivers.


Dubdi Monastery:
Tucked away on a hill top, the Dubdi Monastery is located near Yuksum. The term Dubdi means' the retreat'.


Sinon Monastery:
The word Sinon means 'the suppressor of intense fear'. Sinon monastery is also situated atop a hill and was built in the 18th century.


Ghoom Monastery:

Considered to be the most popular monasteries in Darjeeling, the Ghoom Monastery is actually known as Yogachoeling Gompa. It houses an image of the Maitreya Buddha. The monastery gives amazing views of its surroundings.
