Enchey Monastery

Perched on a hill top, Enchey monastery is an important pilgrimage centre of the Buddhists in Sikkim. It is situated only 3 km from the capital city of Sikkim,Gangtok. The monastery was constructed during the rule of Thutob Namgyal at a site which was blessed by Lama Druptab Karpo. He was a known tantrik of that period and had great flying powers. The legend goes that Lama Druptab Karpo erected a small hut at the very place where he flew down from Maenam Hill(South Sikkim). Later in 1901, the monastery was erected here. The monastery is a home to around 90 monks belonging to the Nyingma sect of Buddhism. The term 'Enchey' means the 'Solitary Temple'. The monastery is dedicated to the worship of Buddha, Loki Sharia and Guru Padmasambhava.
