Yuksam

Yuksam, the holy town was the first capital of Sikkim. Located in the western part of Sikkim at the edge of Kanchanjunga National Park, it is the gateway to Shangri-La or Ney- Pemathang. The term 'Yuksam' literally means' the meeting place of three Lamas'. Its ideal location encompasses forest covered mountains. It is also a famous starting point for trekking to Tshoka-Dzongri-Goecha. Yuksam offers you an opportunity to get a glimpse of the glorious history of Sikkim. Its people, culture, natural beauty and pleasant climate invites you to spend some time in this town. It is said that at this place the first Chogyal king of Sikkim was consecrated in 1641 AD. This ceremony was performed by the three learned lamas.

The footprint of Latsun Chembo(one of the lamas who consecrated the king) can be seen near Norbugang Chorten where the throne is situated. Yuksam is also dotted with Dubdi Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim. It is around 3oo year old. 'Phamrong' waterfall, where water flirts with rocks, is located only 9 km from Yuksom.

The town has a great hotel named TashiDing where you can spend a day or two in a home like environment. And if you really want to know the culture of Sikkim and want to see it from close quarters, then you have an option. Houses of Yoksam are open for tourists and you need to contact the Kungchenzonga Conservation Committee(KKC) for the service. This service is offered with an aim to help poor people financially. Yuksom is well connected with all the major districts of Sikkim.
