Kalimpong

Kalimpong is elevated to an altitude of 1,250 meters with Darjeeling and Gangtok neighboring it. There are three meanings attached to the name Kalimpong – First, it means the place where the local tribesmen assembled to organize field sports. Second, it derived its name from the Bhutanese King's Minister's castle. And third, it takes its name from a fibrous plant 'Kaulim' which is found in plenty in this region. Being the headquarters of the Kalimpong subdivision, the outskirts of the town is occupied by Indian Army.
