Haflong is located at a height of 680 meters above the sea level. Dimashi language is spoken in this region of Assam. Haflong means 'White Ants Hillock' in the native language. Nature that exists in its purest form here is the greatest attraction of the place. Its scenic beauty is simply breath-taking. The Haflong Lake present in the heart of the town adds to its charm.

Haflong is a hill town of blue orchards, oranges and pineapples. Situated at a distance of 84 kilometers north of Silchar, the hill resort houses people from different groups and religions. People from ethnic groups namely Dimasas, Nagas, Hmars and Mizos and religions like Christian, Buddhist and Hindu reside here in complete harmony.

The main market in the centre of the town, which is even more colorful on Saturdays, is the major tourist attraction here. Banana flowers, Dju Vie (rice beer) and betel nut are the major highlights of this bustling marketplace.

Excursions
Jatinga
Jatinga, 9 kilometers off Haflong is famous as a place for the mass suicide of the birds. The whole of this area is blanketed with Blue Vandas Orchids. The bird watching centre here is the chief attraction.

Maibong
Maibong was once the capital of the Dimasa Kachari Kingdom. Its ruins lie on the banks of Mathur River, 47 kilometers off Haflong. A temple and stone house of the kingdom still exist here.

Umrangshu or Umrongso
Umrongso is situated on the borders of Assam. The hill station is merely 112 kilometers off Haflong. The North Cacher Hills region forms a natural and beautiful backdrop of the hill station. Garampani, a hot water spring and Kapili-Hydro Electric Project are the major attractions here.

Reaching There
The nearest railhead is 3 kilometers off Lower Haflong. One can get private buses from the main road. Buses for Silchar are available in the morning while those for Guwahati are available in the evening.
