The largest city in Assam , Guwahati is dotted with several attractions to entice tourists. It is the gateway to Assam. Growing at a fast pace the city is a major commercial and educational centre of North East India. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is one of the examples of the world famous institute located in the city. The term Guwahati is derived from two Assamese words; 'guha' meaning 'areca nut' and 'haat' meaning 'market'. It is tagged as the most beautiful city of Assam dotted with strengthy Brahmaputra, river islands, beaches, beach islands, lush green gardens, lakes and hills.
Guwahati is one of the ancient cities of Asia. It was once the capital of the mythological kings Naraka and Bhagadatta. The mention of these kings is found in the great Hindu epic Mahabharata.


How To Reach:
Air: The Borjhar Airport in Guwahati connects the city to Delhi, Kolkata, Delhi, Agra, Agartala and Imphal and other main cities of India.
Rail: Several trains make Guwahati accessible from the main cities of India.
Road: Guwahati is well connected by road to the other North Eastern states of India.


Climate:
In summer, the temperature varies between 25-40°C. While the winters are cold. The city receives heavy rainfall in July-August. So the best time to visit Guwahati is between February to May.

Being the most important city in the whole of North East, Guwahati provides several accommodation options to the tourists. These saris are famous all over the world for their durability and grace. You can even buy the ethnic dress called 'Mekhela-Chadar' which is very popular dress in Assam. The city has several shopping malls such as the Hub Mall, Dona Planet, Vishal Mega Mart, the Cube Mall.


Cuisine:
Being a metropolitan city, Guwahati has many good restaurants. The traditional cuisine of the city consists of rice and fish. Round off your hearty meal by tasty sweet dish 'Pitha'(kind of a cake).
