About the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary :

Flora and Fauna :

The landscape of the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary is covered with hills, valleys, ridges and gorges. The variation in altitude gives birth to an equally varied vegetation. Tropical to sub-tropical forests cover the region. Oaks, Bonsum, Kachnar, Khasi, Pine, Amari, Gamari, Uriam, Hollock, Bogipoma, Nahor, Alder and Sasi are the most common trees that can be seen in the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary.


Heavy downpours are common in the area giving birth to undergrowth shrubs. Ferns, bamboos and orchids are found in abundance here. You will also get to see Tejpata and Dalchini trees in this area. The fauna of this sanctuary is as rich as its flora. A variety of animals and birds are found here. The important animals include Tiger, Panther, Barking Deer, Jungle Cat, Hoolock gibbons,Himalayan Bear, Sambar, Wild Boar, Bison and Slender Loris. The most common birds here are namely Indian Horn Bill, Grey Pheasant, Doves, Jungle Fowl, Tragopan Pheasant and Green Pigeon.


Reaching the Sanctuary :

The nearest airport from the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary is present in Kohima, the state capital. From there, one can easily reach the sanctuary by road. Well laid railway lines are not present are not present in Nagaland. But reaching the sanctuary through roads is far more convenient as whole of Nagaland is not connected through railway lines. The nearest railway station from the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at Dimapur, Nagaland. NH 39 connects Kohima to Guwahati (Assam). Once you reach Kohima, you will get buses and taxis in order to reach the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary.


Best Time to Travel :

November to February is the best time to explore the Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary.
