Khonoma Green Village

Khonoma Green Village, Nagaland

Synonymous with greenery, Khonoma Green Village is a land blessed with dense forest cover and rich flora and fauna. This green village offers arresting views of the mountains, waterfalls and forests. Orchids and bracken ferns are found in abundance here. It is one of the major attractions of Nagaland which attracts tourists from far and wide. It is located at a distance of 21 km from Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland. It is advisable that you travel to this village on your own vehicle as the public bus service is not that great. In Khonoma one must notice the memorial stones constructed to celebrate feasts of merit, and the intricate system of bamboo pipes which carry water from long distances.

Tourists coming to Khonoma Green village do visit its paddy terraces where 20 types of rice are grown. The cultivation of each variety depends on elevation and soil of a particular block of fields. The entrance to the village is through a beautifully carved gate. At the highest point in the village there lies an ancient bastion which is considered the pride of the village. This place is held in high regard by the Nagas as it is at this place where the Naga warriors had a last fight with the British in 1879.

Several programmes of conservation and awareness were introduced in Khonoma Green Village. As a result of which the village has reserved about 70 sq km of its forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary'(KNCTS). The 'Village Council' of Khonoma has taken a big step by banning hunting not only in KNCTS but also in the entire forest area of the village. The village is playing an important role in the conservation of environment. For spreading awareness on environment conservation Khonoma Tourism Development Board organizes several workshops.
