Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary

Location: Kolasib district,130 km from Aizawl(the capital city of Mizoram).

Main Attraction: Flora and Fauna

Climate: Quite pleasant in summer and not very cold in winter. Heavy rainfall from May to September.

About The Wildlife Sanctuary:
Established in 1985, the Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary is the biggest wildlife sanctuary in the north eastern state Mizoram. It was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1944. It is located in the Kolasib district of the state and shares its border with Bangladesh. Sprawling over an area of 550 sq km, the sanctuary shelters a wide variety of flora and fauna. The landscape of the sanctuary is dotted with hills, valleys, forest and streams.


Flora:
The sanctuary is rich in flora such as Dipterocarpus turbinatus, Dipterocarpus marcocarpus, Terminalia myriocarpa, Michelia champaca, Artorocarpus chaplasha, Sterculia vilosa, Psteropernum personatum, Tonna ciliata, Chukrasia tubularis, Syzygium cumini, Aedinia caudifolia, etc. and different species of Bamboos Cane and Orchids.

Fauna:
The sanctuary is a home to a large number of fauna species. The major fauna consists of Rhesus macaque, Leaf monkey, Pigtail macaque, Stumptail macaque, Hoolock gibbon, Assamese macaque, Tiger, Leopard, Indian Elephant, Gaur, Serow, Barking deer, Wild boar, Porcupine, Sloth bear, Python, King Cobra, Monitor lizard and Hill Tortoise.


The avian species found here are Great Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Red Junglefowl, Crested Serpent Eagle, Emerald Dove and Hill Myna.


How To Reach:
Air: The nearest airport is Lengpui at Aizawl. It connects with Guwahati, Silchar and Kolkata.
Rail: Silchar is the nearest railhead.
Road: Dampa wildlife sanctuary is well connected to Aizawl by road.


Accommodation:
Tourist Lodge and Traveller's Inn are the two accommodation options inside the Dampa wildlife sanctuary. Aizawl has a number of hotels for a comfortable accommodation. The hotels are not very luxurious but they do provide good modern facilities and services.
